Where is Sumbawa?

Sumbawa is an island in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, east of Lombok. Sumbawa Besar and Bima are gateways to different parts of the island. Distances matter: a location that appears close on a map may involve a long road journey or a separate boat crossing.

When should you go?

Plan for the conditions at each destination. Boat outings depend on sea state and wind; waterfalls respond to recent rainfall; hiking depends on weather, access and local restrictions. Seasonal patterns do not guarantee conditions on a particular day.

Before confirming travel, request an activity-specific conditions check. Check current weather advisories through BMKG and follow local decisions about safe access. A detailed seasonal calendar is pending local review.

Responsible whale shark encounters

Whale sharks are wild animals. Sightings, visibility and the ability to enter the water can never be guaranteed. Follow a guide’s briefing, keep an appropriate distance and allow the animal a clear path. Never touch, chase, ride or deliberately feed wildlife. Avoid flash photography and sudden movements.

Speak up if an activity appears to disturb an animal. Choosing not to enter the water is always an option. These principles are informed by WWF Indonesia’s responsible whale shark tourism guidance; follow the locally applicable code and your guide’s instructions.

Planning a multi-day trip

Saleh Bay, Moyo Island and Kenawa require different transfers. Start with the places you most want to experience, then plan realistic travel days between them. Share your dates, group size, swimming ability and preferred pace before requesting an itinerary.

What to discuss before booking

  • Inclusions, accommodation, meals and all transport legs.
  • Swimming ability, suitable equipment and guide supervision.
  • Walking demands, access needs and relevant health considerations.
  • Weather alternatives, cancellation terms and payment arrangements.

Respect local customs, ask before photographing people, bring back your litter and use refillable water bottles where practical.
